Preparedness for regular people
No doom, no zombies — just straightforward, practical advice for real people who want to be prepared without breaking the bank.

Hi, I'm Keith
First off — thank you for being here. Whether you found the show last week or you've been riding along for a couple hundred episodes, it genuinely means a lot that you'd spend part of your day with me.
I started The Common Sense Practical Prepper because most preparedness advice falls into one of two buckets: fear-mongering meant to sell you something, or gatekeeping that makes regular people feel like they could never be “ready enough.” Both miss the point. I'm not a Green Beret or a millionaire with a bunker in the mountains — I'm a regular guy who decided to get his family ready one honest step at a time.
Preparedness runs in my family, even if we never called it that. My grandfather was a medic in World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. My father served in Vietnam. What I took from them wasn't fear — it was the quiet idea that you take care of the people counting on you, and you don't wait for a crisis to start.
That's really what this show is about. A pantry built from the food you already eat. A family that knows where to meet. The calm that comes from having thought things through before they happen. None of it requires a bunker or a big budget.
Every week I tackle a real topic — food and water, home security, situational awareness, off-grid power, privacy, getting your family on board — in a way you can actually act on. A lot of those episodes start as an email from a listener. If there's something specific you'd like to learn about, write me. I read everything, and I answer. Hang in there, and take care.
A little about me off the mic: I've spent the last twenty years in classrooms as a teacher, paraprofessional, and guest presenter in hundreds of different rooms, and I hold a B.A. in Communication and Media Studies from Manchester University. I love connecting with students of every age. I'm also a poet and spoken word artist, the author of three books, a video editor, and an event host. When I'm not working, you'll find me reading, hiking, watching movies, or spending time with family and friends.

What this show stands for
No fear, no hype
We talk about real risks and reasonable responses. No doomsday sales pitch, no shame, no politics — just calm, useful information.
Practical over perfect
The best prep is the one you actually do. We favor cheap, boring, repeatable habits over expensive gear you never learn to use.
Built for families
Preparedness is a team sport. We focus on bringing the whole household along and raising capable, level-headed kids.
One practical step, every week
A short note from me each week — the new episode, one thing you can actually do to be a little more prepared, and the occasional listener story. No spam, no fear-mongering. Just reply anytime; I read every email.
